Flight Lines: tracking the wonders of bird migration
Whether it is the sight of the summer’s first Swallow or the sound of a spring Cuckoo, the return of our summer migrants delivers a reassuring sense of a globe that, as the poet Ted Hughes once described, ‘is still working’. That birds should undertake such long and dangerous migratory journeys is something that has long fascinated us, prompting works of art and literature, not to mention many thousands of scientific studies. Now, at a time when many of our migrant birds are in decline, this fascination with migration has even more relevance.
The BTO's Mike Toms brings together the latest science on our summer migrants, alongside work on the cultural importance of these birds, to tell the story of bird migration and the work being done to address the declines evident in many of their populations.

Kate Fox
Kate will introduce you to the wonder of bird migration; what, when, how and why they do it! She will also give an overview of the important monitoring work done by volunteers and professionals to understand these movements.
Drawing on her experience at Bird Observatories, Kate will give an insight into the monitoring, engagement and conservation work they do. This will include a peak at a day in the life of an Assistant Warden on a remote island, surrounded by seabirds, and embracing the passing of the seasons (and migrating birds with them!).
